A proposal is coming before the city council which involves adding red light cameras to the city of Minneapolis. I personally am opposed to this proposal for the following reasons, due to impacts on business climate & residents:
It will cause even more people to not come to Mpls businesses than already affected by the smoking ban.
It is also an invasion of privacy ala Big Brother.
It sounds like the revenue would barely cover the cost of cameras.
It would also disproportionately impact the poor.
There are also a number of questions to be resolved:
What if your car is stolen or borrowed, or if the machines malfunction? It seems that tickets should not be allowed to be given unless a police officer is present, due to the potential for errors & abuses.
What about the deterrent effect on behavior of getting a ticket from a police officer – this wouldn’t be present if tickets are just received in the mail with little to no accountability from the city or government. If a light is yellow, can a person go through it at all, or do we need to start stopping at green lights to avoid these random tickets in the mail? The traffic impacts could be challenging if people are stopping too early, i.e., when it's green & may turn yellow soon (vs. the current problem of some lights being 'run')
Would these tickets go on a driver’s record with the same effect on insurance rates as ‘normal’ tickets? The accountability isn’t high enough to warrant this, in my opinion.
